Critical Milestones of Level Distribution

  • Level 1-10 as Fighter: Establishing a strong base with hit points and feats.

  • Level 11-20 as Dwarven Defender: Accessing unique defensive abilities.

Importance of Each Level Milestone

At level 1, you start with Toughness and Weapon Focus (Dwarven Waraxe) to hit harder and last longer in battle. By level 4, you’ve added Weapon Specialization for extra damage with your chosen axe. Each feat and level gained is a strategic step toward becoming the fortress your party needs.

At level 8, you gain your first Defensive Stance—a daily ability that boosts your strength and constitution, making you harder to kill and hit. It’s like flipping a switch and becoming a stone wall.

By level 9, with Improved Critical (Dwarven Waraxe), your strikes become more threatening, forcing enemies to think twice before ignoring you to target your allies.

Equipment Progression

  • Early Levels (1-10): Dwarven waraxe, heavy armor, and a sturdy shield.

    • Seek out items that offer the most defensive bang for your buck, like a +1 ring of protection or an amulet of health.

  • Mid Levels (11-15): Upgraded armor and shield, plus defensive magic items.

    • Trade up your armor as soon as you can afford it, but don’t go broke doing it. A +1 full plate is a great start.

  • Late Levels (16-20): Enchanted weapons and the best defensive gear gold can buy.

Choosing the Right Gear at Each Stage

In the beginning, your focus is on acquiring a reliable waraxe and the heaviest armor you can find. You want to be a walking tank, and that means not skimping on protection. A tower shield becomes your best friend, offering cover and defense in equal measure.

As you venture into the mid-levels, consider magic items that enhance your natural dwarven resilience. Rings of protection, amulets of natural armor, and boots of stability will keep you standing when others might fall.

Party Synergy

  • Position yourself to protect spellcasters and ranged attackers from enemy melee.

  • Use your high Armor Class to engage the most powerful enemies, freeing up your allies to handle other threats.

  • Coordinate with your party to funnel enemies into choke points where you can hold them at bay.

Combat Scenarios

Every battle is a chess game, and you’re the rook. Your move is always forward, and your path is always straight to the heart of the enemy. But what happens when the enemy is all around you? That’s when your Defensive Stance and Improved Shield Bash come into play, turning you into a whirlwind of steel that no foe can pass.

  • Defending a narrow pass against a horde of orcs, using your shield to block their advance.

  • Protecting a wounded ally by standing over them and fending off attackers.

  • Serving as a ruse to attract enemy fire as your group prepares an ambush.

  • Taking on a formidable foe one-on-one while allowing your allies to heal or prepare spells.

  • Using your environment to your advantage, like knocking enemies off ledges or into traps.

Attack again lass, but this time, swiftly.”

The old dwarf was studying the young human girl with a smile. Her pose was excellent. Furthermore, her arm was stronger than it was when he first found her that fateful night so long ago.

She charged him, but he deflected her sword with his axe. Strong, but the heart of a child still. He frowned at the thought.

Later that evening, as she was making the both of them tea, he told her a story from his youth. As she sat on the floor near the fireplace, her eyes full of stars at the stories of dragons, and evil undead armies. The stories of her adoptive father who, unmovable as a wall, would protect the innocents against hordes of enemies.

Will I one day be able to protect people’s fathers?

The old dwarf sighed, and replied with a sad smile:

Your heart will bleed a thousand times, before you are truly able to protect only one child.

Her confusion was noticeable, and the old dwarf’s heart shrank at the thought of her pure heart having to endure the agony of failing to save a life.

Perhaps, he thought, that is why he himself took up the shield. So that never again anyone he loved would die while he could do something about it.

Goal

You are an absolute living, breathing, walking fortress. You have nearly 20hp at first level and it only gets crazier from there. Your AC is through the roof, your saves are solid, and as a Dwarven Defender, you can more or less literally become the immovable object.

Your main strategy is to get in the best position on the battlefield (even if it means bullrushing an enemy standing there) and then activate your Defensive Stance. From there, start hacking up enemies. With your high BAB and small Dex bonus early on, you can also use a crossbow. I recommend walking around with your crossbow out, starting the encounter by shooting someone, then dropping it and using your move action to get in position. From there draw your dwarven waraxe and shield as part of your movement.
