Strengths & Weaknesses
| Build | Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|---|
| Elven Wild Dancer[1] | A high Dexterity combined with Elegant Strike, full plate, and a rapier creates a remarkably accurate melee skirmisher who deals damage based on Dexterity. Meanwhile, Primal Scream’s pounce ability, along with Spring Attack or Whirlwind Attack, transforms you into a powerfully mobile striker. This build effectively bypasses many attacks of opportunity. | Full plate and narrow feat choices tax your Dexterity focus, so you struggle to keep touch AC and Reflex saves top-tier. Multiple prestige classes delay core Battle Dancer scaling and leave your unarmed damage and class features underwhelming for a dedicated striker. |
| Shadow Waltz[2] | A Pure Battle Dancer with the Improved Natural Attack feat achieves 6d8 damage with unarmed strikes, delivering substantial damage without weapons. Abilities like Blend into Shadows, At Home in the Deep, and Dance of the Soaring Eagle combine to create a stealthy, flying assassin. This build excels at controlling vision and dictating the terms of engagement. | Staying in one class gives great chassis but almost no out-of-combat utility or save-or-lose options compared to tiered casters. Reliance on darkness and mobility means enemies with blindsight, tremorsense, or freedom of movement can neutralize many of your tactical tricks. |
| Ravager[3] | Superior Unarmed Strike, Improved Natural Attack, Ravager[3]’s Pain Touch, and Cruelest Cut combine to inflict significant Constitution damage and armor-sundering effects. Lion Tribe Warrior and Rage allow you to pounce-charge, dealing massive initial damage. Meanwhile, your Aura of Fear and Visage of Terror help control groups of enemies. | Multiple racial paragon dips and late Battle Dancer levels stall your mobility and AC scaling, hurting defense at higher levels. Very melee-locked, with poor Intelligence and skills, leaving you weak in scouting, diplomacy, and problem-solving outside combat. |
| Shadow Acrobat[4] | High Shadowdancer levels, combined with the Darkstalker archetype and significant ranks in Tumble and Hide, create an incredibly elusive infiltrator. This character bypasses enemy front lines with ease. Numerous summoned shadows support you in combat while you skirmish using sling attacks, further enhanced by the Halfling Paragon’s Thrown Weapon Mastery. | Small size and limited unarmed scaling mean your personal melee damage lags far behind other Battle Dancer based bruisers. Reliance on shadows makes you vulnerable to turning, sunburst, or ghost-touch defenses that erase your main combat impact quickly. |
| The Courtesan[5] | Enchanting Dance (Beguiling, Wearying, Frightful) plus Spymaster Sneak Attack lets you lock down foes while striking hard in social or combat scenes. Disguise Kit, multiple Cover Identities, and Changeling shifting make you an elite infiltrator who can live long-term under deep cover. | Moderate Dexterity and light armor focus leave you less durable than front-line Battle Dancers, especially against area damage and archers. Heavy investment in social feats and classes means you contribute less raw damage and battlefield control than more combat-focused builds. |

Elven Wild Dancer
- Exceptional mobility, combined with the Pounce and Rapid Blitz feats, allows you to make a full attack while continually changing position. You can avoid many attacks of opportunity using Mobility, Spring Attack, and Unimpeded Movement. With Elegant Strike and a high Dexterity score, even a simple rapier becomes a significant source of damage. This damage potential extends even while wearing heavy armor, supported by Divine Grace and the Battle Dancer’s Cha-to-AC ability.
- Characters at early levels can feel vulnerable due to light gear and low hit dice. Flaws such as Vulnerable and Weak Willed further increase damage taken and susceptibility to enchantments. Advancement through multiple Prestige Classes and feats requires a patient Dungeon Master and access to necessary source materials, or character progression may halt completely.
- Once Primal Scream grants pounce at Wildrunner 6, charge from outside enemy reach, unload every attack, then Spring Attack or later Rapid Blitz away.
Shadow Waltz
- Enormous unarmed damage progression combines with full-speed mobility boosts, Dance of the Soaring Eagle flight, and Cha-to-AC to create a fast, hard-to-hit striker that mauls targets.
- Taking levels solely in the Pure Battle Dancer class means forgoing spellcasting and limiting ranged attacks. This build also relies on light armor and strong statistics. Becoming trapped in confined areas, affected by effects that deny flight, or facing enemies with blindsight or trueseeing can severely hinder the darkness-and-mobility strategy this class employs.
- Combine Abuse Darkness with Blend into Shadows to gain Hide checks each round. Then, use Springing Tiger and Circle Kick to deliver extra attacks while swooping from the air, transforming every magical night charge into a swift and powerful combination.

Ravager
- Combining Power Attack, Improved Sunder, Superior Unarmed Strike, Improved Natural Attack, and Ravager[3]’s Pain Touch and Cruelest Cut to punch through gear and Constitution at once. With Cha-to-AC from Battle Dancer, boosted Strength from paragon levels, and fear auras plus Visage of Terror. It controls the battlefield by making foes both fragile and terrified.
- Defense is less effective against powerful casters and optimized chargers because the class lacks armor, a shield, and has low Intelligence. Its hit dice also don’t improve significantly early on. Limited daily uses for features like Pain Touch, Cruelest Cut, and Aura of Fear make the class feel like a basic fighter after those abilities are expended.
- After a powerful sunder attack with Combat Brute’s Momentum Swing, quickly follow up with Flying Kick or Circle Kick. This combination can inflict significant damage and apply Pain Touch to enemies who are now unarmed and panicked. In one game, a player used this tactic against a blackguard’s greatsword. After the sword shattered, the blackguard failed his fear save, suffered Constitution damage, and the encounter ended within two rounds.
Shadow Acrobat
Fast Acrobatics, Acrobatic Charge, Spring Attack, and high Tumble mean you cross entire encounters, then vanish with Hide in Plain Sight or a Shadow Jump. Combined with three shadow companions and strong ranged options from Halfling Paragon. You control position, scouting, and assassination angles far better than almost any other Battle Dancer concept.
Direct melee combat is risky. Low unarmed damage, a moderate Base Attack Bonus (BAB), and limited hit points mean prolonged fighting can be devastating. When facing creatures that bypass shadows, see invisibility, or brightly illuminate areas you will need alternate combat options. You’ll need to prioritize terrain, use the Tumble skill, and rely on sling attacks rather than shadow-based abilities.
Use Tumble to move through an enemy’s space and trigger Acrobatic Strike for the attack bonus. Then, immediately Spring Attack out and Shadow Jump into darkness. This forces foes to waste turns chasing where you last stood. In a long corridor or courtyard, you can effectively kite a boss while your spawned shadows drain its Strength from behind. This turns a direct fight into a slow, one-sided struggle.

The Courtesan
- The versatile mesmer can fill multiple roles. They excel as a front-line unarmed striker, a battlefield controller using spells like *Enchanting Dance* to inflict conditions such as panic, daze, or frighten, and a skilled party face. A mesmer utilizes *Bluff*, *Disguise*, and multiple *Cover Identities* to navigate social encounters effectively.
- Defenses depend greatly on Charisma-based AC, movement, and control effects. Low Constitution and light armor mean focused ranged or area damage can quickly defeat you if your maneuvers or positioning are unsuccessful.
- Begin social encounters using a harmless Cover Identity. Once combat starts, initiate Beguiling or Wearying Dance while feinting and Spring Attacking. This transforms your unassuming persona into a surprising 2d8 unarmed attacker. Enemies will be reluctant to strike, as doing so risks losing valuable information.
FAQ
Which Battle Dancer build is best for a new or casual D&D 3.5 player?
Shadow Waltz[2] is usually the easiest to run at the table. You stay in one class, so leveling decisions stay simple and predictable. Your game plan is clear: turn on darkness, stay mobile, and punch things hard. You do not juggle many subsystems, spells, or complex tracking. Elven Wild Dancer[1] and Shadow Acrobat[4] need tighter feat timing and source approvals. The Courtesan[5] and Ravager[3] demand heavier social or tactical planning. For a first Battle Dancer Battle Dancer game, Shadow Waltz[2] is the least headache.
How do these Battle Dancer builds compare in raw damage versus survivability?
Shadow Waltz[2] and Ravager[3] lead in burst and sustained melee damage. Shadow Waltz[2] does it with giant unarmed dice and mobility-based full attacks. Ravager[3] spikes damage through Power Attack, Con damage, and sunder synergies. Elven Wild Dancer[1] sits just behind them, but wins on hit-and-run safety. Shadow Acrobat[4] and The Courtesan[5] trade damage for control, scouting, and social power. For survivability, Elven Wild Dancer[1] and Shadow Acrobat[4] win through movement and denial. Shadow Waltz[2] and Ravager[3] tank damage more directly and risk harder focus fire.
How do these Battle Dancer builds handle high-level spellcasters?
None of them straight-up duel optimized full casters on equal terms. Shadow Acrobat[4] and Elven Wild Dancer[1] do best using mobility to break line of effect. They pressure casters with flanks, reach gaps, and constant repositioning. Shadow Waltz[2] punishes squishy casters if it can close through darkness. The Courtesan[5] leans on social angles, surprise, and Enchanting Dance to disrupt. Ravager[3] tries to stun, fear, or kill casters before buffs fully land. Smart teamwork and party wizard support matter more than your exact Battle Dancer pick.
Which Battle Dancer build works best in a dungeon-crawl focused campaign?
Shadow Acrobat[4] thrives in tight dungeons with lots of corners and vertical space. Shadow Jump and insane Tumble let you bypass chokepoints and traps. Shadows slip through defenders and drain key targets safely. Shadow Waltz[2] also fares well, using darkness to control sight in hallways. Elven Wild Dancer[1] sometimes struggles in cramped corridors with charge lanes blocked. Ravager[3] loves short, brutal fights, but hates narrow spaces without pounce angles. For classic dungeon grind, Shadow Acrobat[4] usually feels the most unfair.
How do these Battle Dancer builds scale from low to high levels in real campaigns?
Elven Wild Dancer[1] feels weakest early, before plate, pounce, and Dexterity stacking land. It becomes terrifying mid-level, once Spring Attack, Whirlwind, and pounce combine. Shadow Waltz[2] is steady; each damage bump and mobility trick arrives cleanly. Ravager[3] spikes hardest in mid-levels, when Con damage and fear stack rapidly. Shadow Acrobat[4] starts useful early as a scout, then explodes once Shadowdancer turns on. The Courtesan[5] stays relevant at all tiers through roleplay, social leverage, and control dances. In long campaigns, every Battle Dancer build has a distinct sweet spot.
Which Battle Dancer build supports a highly tactical, movement-heavy combat style best?
Elven Wild Dancer[1] and Shadow Acrobat[4] are the movement kings here. Elven Wild Dancer[1] abuses charges, Spring Attack, and Rapid Blitz in open spaces. Shadow Acrobat[4] abuses Tumble, Shadow Jump, and positioning in cluttered arenas. Shadow Waltz[2] likes mobility too, but focuses on closing and mauling. The Courtesan[5] uses movement to maintain dance auras and control spacing. Ravager[3] moves mainly to line up pounce and fear cones. If you love drawing arrows on a battle map, those first two Battle Dancer builds shine brightest.

Elven Wild Dancer
The elven knight was spinning and turning with a grace her full plate shouldn’t be allowing, her rapier in hand, demonstrating a wardance to the elven court. She was one of Corellon Larethian’s own Champions, elves blessed with his martial prowess above any mortal. Her elegant form was like petals landing on still water in a gust of wind.
As she finished her dance, the elven king and his court applauded such a display of mastery, rare even amongst elves. The new Queen, for whom the demonstration was for, raised her glass to the performer and winked at her with a smile, their plan was going on perfectly.

Shadow Waltz

The Dark Elf, despite being chained, was dancing gracefully on the palace’s floor, entertaining guests of the baron, delighted to see such a beautiful specimen paraded like that.
The baron, under the counsel of his mistress, who was quite a savvy woman, had bought her from a travelling slave merchant, and despite the elvic reputation for being attached to their freedom, and especially the dark elves for their treachery, she had remained extremely docile, entertaing his guests, projecting his status amongst his peers.
As he daydreamed about his advancing peerage, he did not notice that the dark elf, as her dance reached it’s crescendo, was whispering words of power. And suddenly, darkness as dark as he had never encountered before.
As he recoiled in his chair in panic, screams all around him, people fleeing as something landed on the table he could still feel right in front of him. As he reached for his blade, he felt the delicate hands of the dark elf wrap around his neck with a force he would have never expected from such a thin frame.
-I have entertained you, now you entertain me Baron. Away, in the night, the Baron’s mistress cackled.

Ravager
Fires and tempo from the war drums were sending the warband into a frenzy, in a terrifying, elaborate dance interspaced with horrid screams. As the chief of the ravagers, a scarred and heavily tattooed half-orc, leading the dance, touched the captured knights, who recoiled in agony at the mere contact of the looming half-orc.
As the chants and dancing rose in intensity, the tortures reached new summits until, as the victims of the ravagers were set afire, the dance came to an abrupt stop and the warband exctased in their screams. So focused they were at this ritual sacrifice to their unholy god, they never noticed one amongst them had disappeared into the night, as if she never was there.

Shadow Acrobat
The halfling jumped from the tower heading toward the ground at rapid speed, but as he was about to crash on the ground, he disappeared into his own shadow, only to reappear in a corner of the stables. He then proceeded to scale the wall from a window and jumped into a murderhole, making sure no one would see him. Using a method of approach that would seem impossible to anyone wearing armor, and helping himself with his power over the very shadows, he made his way to the treasury. The lock on the door didn’t stop him from much longer either. Finally, the Sun Ruby would be his, and he would be the most famous thief in the city.
As he approached the pedestal on which the ruby should have be on display, surrounded by pile of gold and silver pieces, he stopped dead in his tracks. The ruby was nowhere to see. Instead, on the pedestal, a piece of paper was delicately placed there, with only two words accompanied by a kiss mark in velvet red lipstick:
“Too Slow.”

Your Hide skill is ridiculously high and you can switch to a sling and deal more than decent damage by virtue of you being a Halfling Paragon. You are however yourself less of a fighter, your shadows do that for you, you are instead a skirmisher and a scout par excellence.

The Courtesan
Of all the criminal guilds, one of the less well known, yet most effective, is that of the Crimson Courtesans. They are shapechangers, spies and assassins. Able to both enchant a room with their dances and soft words, or viciously murder an entranced target within seconds. Despite being composed of beautiful, largely unarmed women specialized in social engineering, infiltrators who can stay invisible in any society for their own gain, they are far from being harmless, mastering a dancing martial art of great lethality.
And as shapeshifters, they can be anyone.
A Mistress.
A Ravager.
A Queen.
A Guard.
They can be you, me, or any of us.
The only rumored way to identify a member of the Crimson Courtesans it is said, is by a single crimson strand they hide in their haircuts…

You are a great skill-monkey, capable both at exploration and scouting with great hiding skills. Additionally, you’re also a surprisingly effective warrior, your fists dealing considerable damage. With your Enchanting Dance, you can rapidly send foes panicking or dazing them. In doing so, they’ll be forced to stand there – awaiting their slaughter.
But where you truly shine is a party face, in social events, where you can be anyone, bluff your way into and out of spicy situations, and approach damn near any social encounter with a winning hand. This is a high roleplay build packaged into a great fighting build, itself packaged into a skill monkey build.
