Wilder

Strengths & Weaknesses

Build NameStrengthsWeaknesses
Anguish from the Shadows[1]Exceptional stealth and sneak attack capability through Cloud Mind and Mind Stab powers. Adept at vanishing from sight and supernatural detection, making it difficult for opponents to target.
Low constitution and strength could lead to vulnerability in direct combat. Heavy reliance on stealth and surprise which can be countered by true seeing or similar spells. Low HD can leave it susceptible to bursts of high damage.
Jeweled Lord[2]Excellent defense with ability to encrust jewels for additional resistances. Strong tank with spell and poison resistance through dwarven traits.
Limited hit dice due to d4 class, making durability a concern. Heavy reliance on encrusted gems that can be targeted or eliminated. Slow movement speed which can be challenging in quick-paced battles.
Psionic BlasterRaw power specialist with high damage output thanks to Wild Surge and Schism powers. Strong mental defenses and energy manipulation capabilities. Psychic Enervation can result in dangerous side effects. Limited power pool can be a problem in prolonged engagements. Specialization in blasting may limit utility in non-combat encounters.
The Commander[3]Unmatched leadership with Thrallherd class allowing control of multiple thralls. Strong psionic domination abilities and augmented Leadership feat. Dependent on thrall and minion management, which can be tiresome and intricate. Thralls can be eliminated or worse, turned against the Commander[3]. Requires high mental focus and charisma for effective control.
Wild Mind in a Wild Mage[4]Combines psionic and arcane capabilities for massive area damage. Versatile caster with access to both sorcerer’s spells and wilder’s powers at high levels.Suffers from low strength and dexterity, making it physically vulnerable. Relies on a mix of high-level spells and powers that may drain resources quickly in heavy combat.
Anguish Wilder

Anguish from the Shadows

Anguish from the Shadows[1] expertly blends stealth and psionics by combining the abilities of a Wilder, Rogue, and Shadowmind. This build excels in becoming undetectable, using Mind Stab to disappear from all senses, providing great opportunities for sneak attacks.

  • Its major strength is the ability to become completely undetectable, even to supernatural perception, which makes it a top-tier sneak attack enabler.
  • With only a modest Constitution and a lack of heavy armor, the character can be vulnerable in prolonged engagements if detected.
  • Use Cloud Mind to manipulate targets’ awareness, perfectly setting up devastating sneak attacks without risking exposure.

Jeweled Lord

The Jeweled Lord[2] build melds the Wilder’s psionic blasting capabilities with the Crystal Master’s gem-related defenses, resulting in a durable, d4 HD tank able to resist spells and status conditions. Utilizing the dwarf race’s innate resistances, this build enhances survivability through embedded gems that provide unmatched protection and utility in battle.

  • Immunity to multiple effects through embedded gems, enhancing the Wilder’s natural psionic prowess to incapacitate or outlast opponents.
  • Reliance on d4 Hit Dice makes it vulnerable to high damage bursts despite significant defensive measures.
  • Embedding gems not only provides immunity but can also be used strategically for resistance stacking with other resistances the dwarf race offers.
Jeweled Lord
Psionic Blaster

Psionic Blaster

The Psionic-Blaster Wilder channels raw psionic power to unleash devastating energy blasts, beautifully marrying simplicity and might. With a high Charisma score, they maximize their Wild Surge ability, enhancing damage output but at the risk of Psychic Enervation.

  • Wild Surge allows the Psionic-Blaster to boost their powers significantly, dealing impressive damage that can often decide battles swiftly.
  • The risk of Psychic Enervation, which can stun the Wilder, halting their effectiveness and making them vulnerable in combat.
  • Using Schism from the Extra Power feat can create a second mind to cast extra powers, ensuring you always have offensive options while mitigating risks of Psychic Enervation.

The Commander

The-Commander build employs the Thrallherd Prestige Class, making it a powerhouse of psionic control, turning Leadership into an enhanced mechanic. This build dominates targets, creating a network of permanent thralls, effectively doubling its influence and strategic might through psionic means.

  • This build excels in creating and controlling a vast network of followers and thralls, significantly enhancing its strategic possibilities in any encounter.
  • Its reliance on the Thrallherd class means that any environment heavily safeguarding against mind control or psionics could greatly diminish its effectiveness.
  • Utilize ‘Linked Power’ to chain psionic abilities efficiently, maintaining flexibility by having one power activate immediately after the first, without spending extra time or resources.
Commander
Wild Mind

Wild Mind in a Wild Mage

The Wild-Mind-in-a-Wild-Mage build unleashes chaotic power by fusing arcane and psionic prowess. It excels in delivering destructive magic with a mix of wild magic and psionic abilities, making it formidable on any battlefield.

  • This build can deliver immense damage by combining 6th-level sorcery with 9th-level wilder psionics, maximizing the versatility of offensive and defensive spells.
  • The build’s reliance on both arcane and psionic systems makes it complex to manage, leaving it vulnerable to abilities that target either magic or psionics specifically.
  • Use the Wild Magic from the Wild Mage class synergistically with the Wild Psionic Surge to produce unpredictable, high-impact effects that can turn the tide of battle.

FAQ

How does Anguish from the Shadows[1] Wilder compare in effectiveness during combat?

This build excels in guerrilla tactics, capitalizing on stealth and surprise. The ability to vanish or manipulate opponents mentally can turn battles quickly. However, it struggles in head-on combat due to low constitution and raw strength. True seeing or similar spells could neutralize its stealth benefits, posing significant challenges.

What party setup best complements the Jeweled Lord[2] Wilder?

Having supportive spellcasters can cover for its limited speed and size. Rogues can capitalize on the confusion this build creates, striking decisively. Healers are crucial, given its limited d4 hit dice reducing durability. Heavy-hitters in the frontline join well with the Jeweled-Lord’s tanking ability.

What are key tactics for optimizing a Psionic Blaster Wilder build?

Maximize damage using Wild Surge and Schism for powerful mental attacks. Prioritize targets that threaten your fragility, focusing on overwhelming force. Be cautious, as Psychic Enervation might have side effects impacting your prowess. Manage the power pool wisely to avoid exhaustion during prolonged encounters.

Which skills are essential for The Wilder Commander in a campaign?

Leadership and social skills are crucial, aiding in thrall management and battle strategy. Mental focus enhances controlling minions, maximizing efficiency and reliability. Prioritize charisma for increased effectiveness in your dominating abilities. Be wary of opponents targeting thralls to dismantle your strategy.

Anguish from the Shadows

As the woman clad in a white coat was dodging the elf’s silver shortswords, she couldn’t help but notice how odd the elf’s movements were. As a master rogue herself, such technique, while well honed, lacked the grace she was expecting not only from a fellow rogue, but doubly so from an elf.

But her questions had to wait, she had to finish that fight rapidly to go help her sister and their new friend. She readied herself, silver was a pain in the ass, but she’ll endure it to catch her opponent off guard. The elf smiled, and, as the shortsword drew blood, the elf completely vanished from all the woman’s senses. Even her predatory scent no longer detected him…

So, I have a confession to make. Shadowmind is one of my favorite PrCs in 3.5. The ability to manifest Cloud Mind at almost zero cost is ridiculous for a scout, and despite a

somewhat reduced ability to manifest powers, you compensate by being a fantastic skill monkey, a decent melee skirmisher and with the ability of Mind Stab, able to completely disappear from a target’s mind and all their senses, including supernatural is just downright one of the best sneak attack enablers in the game.

Jeweled Lord

The fat dwarf, covered in jewels from head to toe, both worn and encrusted in his skin, watched the group of adventurers making their way in his underground palace.

“They are here for my riches,” his paranoia told him. Around him, gems of great value, empowered by his very mind, were floating in his gold pieces littered treasure room that he hadn’t left in a decade, content of counting his ill gotten gains.

“I’ll let the Commander deal with them, counting my money is too important a task right now.”

Goal

So, Wilders qualify easily for Crystal Master. Crystal Masters can empower gems and encrust them in their own body to make themselves immune to a bunch of effects. Dwarves are already extremely resistant to spells and poisons. Yes, this is a d4 HD tank, and it somehow not only works, it doesn’t remove anything from the Wilder’s ability to blast and dominate the battlefield into submission.

3. ↑ Wilder – The Commander – D&D 3.5 ( The Commander )

The Commander

The woman clad in light armor heard the mental command of her Jewel Lord. She mentally bowed and walked to the seeing pool in her room. Four adventurers. Two werewolves, and two noblemen. She stopped to ponder for a moment. She could send her vast army at them, but this was an opportunity to claim the title of Jewel Lord for herself. She turned around to her two mental slave ogres. She smiled.

Well, her Lord didn’t asked her to send both of them at the same target now didn’t he?

Goal

Okay, remember how Leadership is the strongest feat in D&D?

Okay now what if there was an entire Class dedicated to make Leadership into a Psionic thing and crank the feat to eleven?

Meet the Thrallherd, possibly the single most busted PrC in 3.5. You get all the advantages of Leadership, leveling up your Manifester level, the ability to Psionically Dominate targets and turn them into your permanent thralls, but also get two of them. Broken. Absolutely broken.

Wild Mind in a Wild Mage

The man was throwing spell after spell at the small insect-like creature, who was expertly deflecting his spells and then countering with wild magic empowered blasts of evocation magic. The man however, was not alone, his brother and his brother’s girlfriend were closing in on the dromite. Soon, it would run out of spells the man thought.

The Dromite smirked.

“Your calculations are good Arcane Trickster, but magic is not what I specialize in.”

The man barely had the time to duck and scream a warning to the other two adventurers as the dromite seemed to explode suddenly in a burst of purple energy.
