Duke’s Blade
A master of speed and precision, the Duke’s Blade is a lethal assassin who can eliminate a target before they even get to act. With an unparalleled combination of Iaijutsu strikes, Death Attacks, and battlefield mobility, this build is a high-risk, high-reward glass cannon capable of deciding a fight in the first moments of combat.
- The ability to attack as part of initiative, often killing a target before they can react.
- Extremely fragile; if caught off guard, the build lacks the survivability to endure prolonged combat.
- Use battle jump and terrain advantages to maximize Iaijutsu Focus, turning surprise attacks into devastating first strikes.
Fractured Mind
A towering half-ogre hulk, the Fractured Mind[1] throws massive, sword-shaped mind blades with earth-shaking force, knocking enemies prone on impact. With absurd Strength scaling (43 at level 20 without magic items), it’s a build that dominates the battlefield through sheer raw power and control.
- Can knock flying enemies out of the air, causing devastating fall damage and setting them up for further punishment.
- Lacks flexibility; outside of raw brute force and hurling mind blades, it has limited tactical options.
- Use Knockdown Blow and Cleave to create chain reactions of destruction, taking out multiple enemies in one devastating turn.

Mage Slayer
The ultimate bane of spellcasters, the Mage Slayer is an unstoppable anti-magic assassin who ignores magical concealment, dispels abjurations, and strikes directly at mental ability scores. With mindsight, nondetection, and invisibility tricks, this halfling is an undetectable nightmare for any wizard or sorcerer.
- Nearly immune to divinations and enchantments, rendering many casters powerless against him.
- Struggles against purely martial enemies who don’t rely on magic, as his specialized toolkit is less effective.
- Keep a potion of invisibility handy—True Seeing won’t help against you, making you an absolute terror in the shadows.
Master of the Three Circles
A versatile master of ranged combat, the Master of the Three Circles[2] adapts to any range, striking with mind arrows at a distance, throwing deadly projectiles at mid-range, and engaging in melee when necessary. With precision, multi-target attacks, and tactical adaptability, this build excels in fluid combat situations.
- Can attack against Touch AC at mid-range, making heavily armored enemies easy prey.
- Lacks overwhelming burst damage, relying instead on consistent pressure across all ranges.
- Use Phase Arrow to bypass obstacles, striking foes behind cover or even inside fortifications.

Sword of the Soul
A pure Soulknife build, the Sword of the Soul[3] focuses on speed, mobility, and surgical precision, leaping in and out of combat while delivering devastating psychic strikes. With Knife to the Soul, it can cripple spellcasters by directly reducing their key ability scores, potentially rendering them useless in a single round.
- Can deal massive Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma damage, shutting down enemy casters instantly.
- Lacks the class diversity of other builds, making it less adaptable to complex scenarios.
- Pair Knife to the Soul with Bounding Assault to stay mobile while sapping enemy casters’ ability to fight back.
FAQ
What makes the Soulknife different from other melee classes in D&D 3.5?
The Soulknife doesn’t rely on traditional weapons, instead manifesting a psionic mind blade that scales in power. This allows them to be self-sufficient, avoiding the need for magical weapons while focusing on mobility and unique combat techniques.
How does the Duke’s Blade Soulknife build manage to attack before combat starts?
By utilizing Improved Initiative, Iaijutsu Focus, and Battle Jump, this build can attack as part of rolling initiative. Combined with Death Attack, it can eliminate enemies before they have a chance to act.
Can the Fractured Mind[1] Soulknife really knock flying enemies out of the air?
Yes! Thanks to Knockdown Blow, enemies struck by the thrown mind blade are knocked prone. If they’re airborne, they crash to the ground, suffering fall damage and becoming easy targets for follow-up attacks.
Why is the Mage Slayer Soulknife so effective against spellcasters?
This build completely bypasses True Seeing, resists Divination and Enchantment spells, and shuts down casters by draining Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma with Knife to the Soul, making them unable to cast spells.
Which of these Soulknife builds is the best for a new player?
The Sword of the Soul[3] is the most straightforward, as it focuses entirely on the Soulknife’s core mechanics. It offers strong mobility, high damage, and consistent effectiveness without requiring complex mechanics like Iaijutsu Focus or spell resistance.

Fractured Mind

The masked man bound high in the air with a single leap. He barely avoided the massive mind-blade which sliced the wall behind him. In mere moments, the rooftop slid & crumbled to the streets below.
That was one very unusual opponent. The immense half-ogre manifested his gigantic mind-blade as to strike again.
In the moments it took to prepare, the masked man saw a pattern. All he needed was a single second, an opportunity. If he failed, and that mind-blade struck him…
As the Half-Ogre screamed his fury, ready to throw his huge mind-blade, there was that opportunity. The masked man wouldn’t need another one.

Goal
You throw large sized, bastard sword shaped mind blades with enough force to knock down enemies in one strike. No seriously, each time you hit someone by throwing your mind blade, they are automatically knocked prone. Throw it at a flying dragon and he comes crashing down, receiving tons of fall damage, and within even closer reach of your straight up ridiculously high damage blade. Also, your Strength is 43 by level 20. With no magic items. Let that sink in.

Master of the Three Circles

The woman stood in the dark of the cavern, barely illuminated by candlelight. Three circles had been painted on the ground, each encircled the other. She was in the middle as she observed her two newest pupils.
–“As you will develop your mind’s blade, you will go through all three circles of combat. You shall start in this smallest circle, and increase your reach”.
One the pupils raised his hand.
–“But isn’t that third circle extremely large? How can our mind-blades reach that far?” He asked, the woman smirked in response, and reached out a hand.
–“Like this”.
Several mind-blades protruded from her arm, and warped into reality as if pulled from her flesh as a medium. Each mind-blade took the form of arrows before she fired them across the room.
Afterwards, the woman looked to her pupil, crossing her arms behind her back and took a deep breath with an air of self-contentment.
–“With such a reach, you just might be able to defeat the Duke”.
The pupil who asked the question was jumping in excitement. The second only stared, noting his “master’s” every movement. So that was the Three Circles Style. He let out a smirk, she wouldn’t be a problem to deal with.

The man jumped from one roof to another. The guards, hot on his tail, the booted stomp of his pursuers close behind. He had vital intelligence on the Duke’s infernal patron and he could not be taken alive.
He stopped suddenly, the next roof was a hard distance to simply jump.
As he hesitated, he heard the footsteps and the armors of the guards finally close the gap.
–“Stop, you are under arrest in the name of his excellency the Duke”.
He turned around slowly, his arms in the air. There were four of them, two with heavy crossbows and two with pikes. He smiled.
–“You think you caught me? Catch these”.
Blades of pure energy erupted from his hands towards the guardsmen. Four mind-blades and each were as fast as lightning as they struck their targets.
As they recoiled in pain he used the opportunity to run past them, jumped down from the roof into a darkened alley. He finally managed to lose them in the maze of streets of the city.
As the man crumbled in a back alley, exhausted, he smiled. He had managed to escape. Maybe his employer would have a shot at taking down the Duke with the information he could hand over.
–“You have mastered your mind blades, truly impressive”. A voice called from the dark, which made the young man jump.
–“Who are you? Show yourself!”
A figure emerged from the shaded alleyway, clad in a dark coat, a white mask on his face.
–“You? Your order doesn’t exist! It’s a myth.” He screamed in terror, the man’s instinct for survival took over as he sprinted for the street beyond.
The morning came, the man’s body was found floating in the river, his secrets gone with him.
